NUJ condemns attack on journalists in Ogun
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Zone B, has frowned at the attack on the Secretary of the Ogun State NUJ Council, Comrade Bunmi Adigun and his camera man from the Ogun State Television (OGTV) by the security agents attached to Governor Ademola Adeleke, at Joga-Orile in Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State on Friday
The union in a statement by the Vice President of the zone, Comrade Ronke Samo and the Secretary, Comrade Abdulrasaq Alege, described the action of the security agents as barbaric, uncivilized and uncalled for in a democratic setting .
It stressed that the action of the overzealous security agents attached to Governor Adeleke stands condemned by entire NUJ Zone B comprising of Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ondo, and Ekiti states as the attack on Comrade Adigun and his Cameraman was an affront and embarrassment to the fundamental principles of press freedom.
” The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Zone B condemned in its entirety the attack on Two of our members in Ogun state, Comrade Bunmi Adigun and one other by some of the overzealous and undemocratic security agents attached to Gov Ademola Adeleke at Joga-Orile in Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State on Friday”, it said
NUJ Zone B added, ” the attack on our members stands as a direct attack on the entire NUJ members across the Zone B and Nigeria in general and the union will not allow it to be swept under the carpet”.
” The NUJ zone B hereby demand for the investigation of the assault on our members at Joga-Orile in Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State and that the concerned overzealous security agents should be identified and be sanction by the concerned authorities”
The union then called on the Nigeria Police Force and the Inspector General of Police, (IGP) to fish out the erring Policemen and bring them to book so as to forestall such act of overzealousness on journalists in the future.
It also urged Governor Adeleke as a journalists friendly person to call the overzealous security agents in his entourage to order so as not to be sending wrong signals to the public.
