Ogun State Governorship candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party, (NNPP) in the March 2023 election, Ambassador Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo, has cautioned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, not to interfere with the functions of the judiciary but instead allow it to function effectively as expected in a democratic governance.
This is just as he said the President should not cow the judiciary, saying he should realise that Nigeria is not Lagos where he turned the state into an All Progressives Congress (APC) state with no functioning opposition parties.
Ajadi in a statement issued after paying a solidarity visit to Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State, over a Court of Appeal judgement which nullified his election last Friday, said democracy tolerates oppositions and that without credible opposition it cannot thrive.
He said both APC as a party and the President are too desperate to control all states in Nigeria, hence their resorts to pushing judiciary to achieve their aim of foisting on the country a one party system.
According to him, “Last week, former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, warned the nation on the plan of the ruling APC and President Bola Tinubu to turn the country to a one – party state.
“He also called for a merger of opposition parties against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“Atiku said this becomes necessary as he warned that Nigeria’s democracy is “fast becoming a one-party system” and noted that the project of protecting democracy in the country is not about just one man.
“I agree with Alhaji Atiku and want all other statesmen to rise up and caution President Tinubu not to turn the country to Lagos State where he pockets everything.”
On the judgement against Governor Abba Yusuf, Ajadi said “His Excellency, Governor Abba Yusuf should remain calm, as this judgement cannot stand the test of time.
“I also pledged with our presidential candidate, Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwakwanso to remain calm and urged our supporters nationwide to remain calm.
“The people of Kano State know that our party is the leading party in the state and this has been demonstrated in the other elections.
“NNPP has the highest members of the state Assembly, highest members of the National Assembly from the state and we are with the grassroots.”
