Oyo NUJ charges journalists not to spread fake news

The Oyo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), has enjoined journalists in the state not to join politicians in the spread of fake and unverified information.

It  gave the warning in a communique issued at the end of its monthly congress held on Wednesday.

The communique prepared by Comrade Abiodun Atilola (Chairman); Comrade Mosunmola Akinola (Secretary) and Comrade Dayo Adu (Member), was made available by the Secretary of the union, Comrade Olusola Oladapo.

The Union while noting that the warning became necessary in view of the forthcoming elections in the year 2027, enjoined journalists to always fact-check information from politicians.

It warned that this was necessary to prevent a situation where journalists would be caught in the web of fake news, misinformation, and disinformation.

The Union also condoled Governor Seyi Makinde; the Olubadan-in-Council and the people of Ibadanland over the passing on of the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin.

The communique read, “The Congress observed the increasing political activities towards the 2027 general elections, and enjoined journalists to always fact-check information from politicians so that they would not be caught in the web of fake news, misinformation, and disinformation.

“The Congress, condoled Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, the entire Ibadan indigenes and the royal family on the passing of the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland,  Oba Owolabi AKinloye Olakulehin (Ige Olakulehin 1), and prayed for the repose of his soul.
“The Congress commended the well-arranged system of ascendancy to the throne of Olubadan, such that on the demise of one Olubadan, the next person that would occupy the throne would be thrown up by the system.
“The Congress noted that there was peace in Ibadan during the reign of the 43rd Olubadan. The Congress, however, enjoined Oba Rashidi Ladoja, who has been thrown up by the system as the next Olubadan of Ibadanland to sustain and build on the already existing peace in the Ibadan Obas-in-Council and Ibadanland.
“The Congress commended Oyo State Government for not relenting its efforts in the ongoing construction of the Ibadan Circular Road and other road projects across the state.
“The Congress advised members to regularise their membership status with the Union both at the State and the National Secretariat in order for them to position themselves for qualification as delegates for this year’s Oyo NUJ council election.”
